About the Role

The Regional Content Manager will serve as Mercy Corps' primary storytelling and content lead across Africa. The successful candidate will develop compelling, community-focused narratives and multimedia content that support fundraising, communications, media engagement, marketing, and brand awareness objectives.

Working closely with country offices, regional leadership teams, and global communications teams, the role will ensure a consistent pipeline of impactful stories that highlight program achievements, elevate community voices, and strengthen audience engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Content Strategy and Planning

The successful candidate will design and implement regional storytelling strategies aligned with organizational priorities and communication goals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and executing a regional content strategy.

  • Identifying storytelling opportunities across programs, campaigns, emergencies, and strategic initiatives.

  • Building and managing a robust regional content pipeline.

  • Collaborating with global communications, marketing, fundraising, and creative teams to identify content needs.

  • Supporting content planning for major campaigns, emergencies, and brand initiatives.

Multimedia Content Creation and Storytelling

The Regional Content Manager will lead the production of high-quality multimedia content across Africa.

Key duties include:

  • Producing compelling written stories, photography, videos, interviews, and social media content.

  • Capturing timely stories that showcase program impact and community resilience.

  • Creating platform-specific content for digital channels, donor communications, media relations, and fundraising campaigns.

  • Managing freelance photographers, videographers, writers, and content creators when required.

  • Ensuring all content adheres to brand guidelines, ethical standards, and safeguarding policies.

Regional Content Coordination and Support

The role serves as the primary focal point for content requests across the region.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating with country teams to identify storytelling opportunities.

  • Organizing field visits, permissions, and logistical arrangements for content collection.

  • Supporting global photography, media, and creative initiatives.

  • Responding quickly to emerging crises and urgent storytelling needs.

  • Managing and maintaining regional multimedia content libraries and digital assets.

Capacity Building and Community Storytelling

A key aspect of this role involves strengthening storytelling capabilities across teams and partner organizations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Training and mentoring country teams on effective storytelling techniques.

  • Supporting the creation of high-quality user-generated content (UGC).

  • Building communications capacity among program staff and local partners.

  • Promoting community-centered storytelling approaches that prioritize dignity, inclusion, and local leadership.

  • Developing storytelling resources, guidelines, and best practices.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

The Regional Content Manager will work closely with multiple departments to maximize the impact of communications initiatives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with marketing, fundraising, media relations, brand, and creative teams.

  • Supporting donor communications and fundraising campaigns.

  • Contributing to media engagement and thought leadership initiatives.

  • Monitoring content performance and recommending improvements to increase audience engagement and impact.

Safeguarding and Ethical Storytelling

The successful candidate will:

  • Ensure photography, video, and written content comply with organizational safeguarding policies.

  • Respect the dignity, privacy, and well-being of participants and communities.

  • Promote open communication and encourage reporting of safeguarding concerns when necessary.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Educational Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Media Production, International Development, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • At least five years of professional experience in communications, journalism, storytelling, digital media, or related fields.

  • Proven experience producing high-quality multimedia content, including photography, video, and written stories.

  • Experience working in complex international environments, preferably within humanitarian or development sectors.

  • Experience managing freelancers, vendors, and creative projects.

Required Skills and Competencies

Successful candidates should possess:

  • Excellent writing, editing, interviewing, and storytelling skills.

  • Strong understanding of social media platforms and digital content strategies.

  • Knowledge of audience engagement techniques and content performance metrics.

  • Experience with photography, video production, editing software, and content management systems.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to travel frequently, including to remote and challenging environments.
