Position Purpose

The Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in ensuring that all plant machinery, equipment, and facility assets operate safely and efficiently. The position involves fault diagnosis, preventative maintenance, equipment repairs, and compliance with company standards and government regulations.

This role contributes directly to minimizing downtime, improving equipment performance, and supporting continuous production operations.

Key Responsibilities

Plant Maintenance and Equipment Reliability

  • Perform routine maintenance on plant machinery and equipment.

  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults and implement effective repairs.

  • Conduct equipment inspections to identify potential issues before failures occur.

  • Maintain high levels of equipment reliability and operational performance.

  • Support asset lifecycle management and equipment optimization initiatives.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Develop and execute preventative maintenance schedules.

  • Ensure maintenance activities are documented and completed according to company procedures.

  • Monitor equipment performance to reduce unexpected breakdowns.

  • Implement maintenance improvements that increase plant efficiency and reliability.

Fault Finding and Troubleshooting

  • Investigate equipment failures and identify root causes.

  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

  • Assist with PLC fault diagnosis and basic programming tasks where required.

  • Resolve maintenance issues quickly to minimize operational downtime.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations.

  • Adhere to company safety policies and procedures at all times.

  • Practice safe working methods when performing maintenance tasks.

  • Ensure equipment operates according to legal and company standards.

  • Serve as a competent person as required by applicable regulations.

Inspection and Reporting

  • Conduct daily inspections of plant equipment and facilities.

  • Record and report maintenance findings and operational concerns.

  • Identify risks that may impact plant performance or safety.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.

Spare Parts and Inventory Management

  • Source and manage maintenance spare parts and equipment.

  • Ensure critical components are available to support maintenance activities.

  • Assist in inventory control to prevent shortages and production interruptions.

Team Leadership and Support

  • Supervise and motivate maintenance team members where required.

  • Support collaborative problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Carry out tasks assigned by management efficiently and professionally.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric)

  • N4 Qualification

  • Trade Tested Artisan (Millwright)

Technical Requirements

  • PLC Experience

  • Mechanical and electrical maintenance knowledge

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of technical maintenance experience

  • Previous experience within an FMCG manufacturing environment

Required Skills and Knowledge

Technical Competencies

  • Trade Tested Artisan qualification (Millwright, Electrical, or Mechanical)

  • Mechanical and electrical systems maintenance

  • Preventative and predictive maintenance planning

  • Root cause analysis and fault-finding expertise

  • PLC troubleshooting and basic programming knowledge

  • Hydraulics and pneumatics systems maintenance

  • Robotics systems understanding

  • CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management Systems) experience

  • Equipment reliability management

  • MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) and MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) principles
